But why?

Meet Emily, Orly & Kate: three English speaking Israelis (one born in Israel but raised in Canada, one raised in the U.S. by an Israeli father and the other raised in Australia), each working in the field of non-profits and fundraising in Israel who met whilst studying for their M.A. at the Hebrew University. Baffled by the lack of young Israeli philanthropy and inspired by wonderful people across the country initiating brilliant social projects in attempt to support those in need, the three initiated Keren Baktana. They discovered this: Local Israeli philanthropy is a developing field. In a 2010 survey it was found that only 1/3 of the philanthropy supporting the third sector in Israel came from local Israeli sources. Amongst Israelis who do participate in philanthropy, it is particularly rare to find young professionals engaged and active in this field. This is a population that is financially able to participate in the world of philanthropy and, in fact, represent the future of this integral form of funding for the third sector in Israel.

Amongst Israelis who do participate in philanthropy, it is particularly rare to find young professionals engaged and active in this field. This is a population that is financially able to participate in the world of philanthropy and, in fact, represent the future of this integral form of funding for the third sector in Israel. In addition, there is a vibrant community of creative innovators in Israel, filled with ideas for small-scale cultural, artistic, social and scientific projects, which have little access to the limited amount of funding they require to launch their ideas. Keren Baktana was created as a means to address both of these problems.

So how?

Keren Baktana is a network of micro-giving circles for young professionals. Each chapter is a group of 15-20 young Israelis who are pooling donations and granting to worthy social projects. By investing in small community based projects with great social impact, Keren Baktana is collecting a cohort of fresh, innovative, social entrepreneurs working to create change. At the same time, this network of giving will revolutionize the involvement of the next generation of Israelis in the field of philanthropy, and will provide our "trustees" with a guided entry into the world of larger giving and social involvement.

Keren Baktana is currently forming chapters across the country, organized by location and/or theme and providing access to online platforms and marketing and administrative support for each of the chapters. By stripping back the bureaucracy and red tape usually associated with the foundation world, Keren Baktana provides easy access and “a little” support for new givers and new social do-gooders across the country.
